Led us On and On and On

After a 2 hour interview - the entire time my granddaughter being told how beautiful and talented she was, the bomb was dropped when we were told it was $2300. Wow!

We were led to believe that she had this wonderful chance to become an actress or model. Then we looked around the room when we were leaving and realized that everyone that had come to the session was being told the very same thing. Slick salesmanship. Let's see - 15 x $2300 = $34,500.

This was just one interviewing session. I'm sure there were many while they were in Spokane, WA. They make the wannabe believe that something wonderful will happen and make the parent feel guilty if they don't dish out the $$$. What a wasted Sunday morning that was.

Don't fall for it. I'm thinking one in 5,000 will benefit from this.

Barbizon Modeling School Reply:
We are sorry you felt your time was wasted during the information session. We strive to be upfront with program expectations and will be sure to address this internally.

Hi, I came across this post because my eldest daughter graduated from Barbizon in Seattle last year and I am now thinking of putting my younger daughter in the classes to help her re-adjust after we moved. Barbizon did amazing things for my daughter.

They did not ever make us feel "guilty" as you said, and I think the skills she was taught are worth every penny and more.

She gets a call every time there is a local runway show or catalog shoot for her age group and the look on her face when she books a job is so incredibly rewarding as a parent. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your interview as much as we did but I hope your daughter felt beautiful!

Barbizone

Many people in Sacramento have been getting called into this modeling agency. I was found by a recruiter.

They kept calling me asking me if i was interested, i said no. The lady said she was going to take me off the list. I got another phone call today and I told the lady what happened the day before, she asked me to talk slower. I repeated myself a lot slower and shes like ok ill take you off the list because i wouldn't want to work with you anyways because of your attitude.

I was thinking to myself what attitude?! SOooo Rude!

#556768

You know its a scam because i gave them 400$ in advanced before my first class tgen i changed my mind and wanted my money bck before even attending a class but they said no then yess but they wont return it. Look for real agent in your area but first you actually have to work on your wharever you want to do or take local ckasses or school plays.

Your agent will only get money from you after you get paid for like a commercial and stuff like that. You shouldnt pay to join an agencie.

I don't believe it's a scam they do teach valuable confidence skills BUT I've been told there are other agencies that are lower costs and some that you can get training either extream low $ or even pay upon the job(s)you get from there assistance. Do the homework if its a path/carrer choice you want to "invest" in cuz that's what it's all about- investing in yourself :) GOOD LUCK, anonymous Parent

Barbizon is a scam, fake, and they lie and is way too expensive

I went to Barbizon in Boston and it was awful. It was in an old, run-down building.

The classes at Barbizon are mainly for girls/boys who do not have any confidence, which is fine if it did not cost so much money. Barbizon gets your information by having your sign up for a raffle to win a free make-up bag or scholarship for the school. However, I have never heard of anyone actually getting the scholarship. Once they get your information, they call you when they are in the area to come in for an interview.

After that, they call and claim tell your guardian how beautiful they think you are, and how much potential you have. They explain that they think you could be very successful and that their classes would really help you become a model. I finished the program and never received phone calls for any modeling or acting gigs. However, I did receive phone calls to be a Barbizon representative (which is just the person who takes down your information at the mall!) I have called Barbizon in Florida to ask about it why they never have any work for me, or at least offer any casting calls.

They explain that I need to go to a modeling agency to get work. I talked with modeling agencies and they also agree that it is a scam!

Waste of money. Don't do it!

Go straight to the modeling agency instead! Save yourself $2,000!

I agree with Stephen, you took the classes.

I took the classes and loved them. My teacher modeled for Barbizon when she was a teen in Europe and in Ohio and she has her masters in Teaching. I don't model anymore as I am in school out of state. But I had fun and learned a great deal. I did work for Dots and ***'s sporting goods.

thinking of signing my daughter up for these classes and i've read the contract multiple times. it clearly says you don't get a refund if you go to classes (which you obviously did).

why would they give you your $$$ back if you used the service?

Deboraha Desidario is a JOKE!

I have a friend that attended Barbizon Wilkes-Barre about ten years ago and she has been very successful so when i heard Deboraha was looking for an employee to fill my friends spot while she was on an internationl model search i thought it would be great, but i was so wrong! I went for my interview and Deb told me "in order to work here you need to go through the classes so you understand the industry." It made sense to me since I was very excited about this opportunity and I had seen how succesful my friend was so I agreed.

I had to pay $195 just to sign up for classes $2095 for the classes and supplies and $100 for every class attended. I was paying for this myself and decided to take out a loan to establish credit so i paid for EVERYTHING up front. We got our make-up kits, book, and barbizon bag all the first day. The make-up kits SUCKED!

It was a cheap metal case with a barizon sticker slapped on the front and the make-up didn't even last. Our books were paper back and half the pages were effed up. I was very disappointed in them, but more disappointed in the teacher. She was AWFUL!

She stared at herself in the mirror all day long and all she said was "you're doing great" even when we weren't! I did not learn a *** thing so I decided to drop out becuse I had a 3 hour drive round trip and I was no longer going to waste my time or money. When i dropped out we had 3 1/2 classes to go so Deb owed me $350 (since i had paid for classes ahead of time). She refused and said if you drop out you have to pay $350 for "supplies" which was the PAPER BACK BOOK, *** MAKE UP, AND A BAG!

I thought that's what the $1095 covered? then she had the nerve to ask me to start my classes over with a new teacher! F THAT! Needless to say, after i dropped out other people in my class started complaining and decided not to go to IMTA which outraged Deb.

My teacher ended up getting the boot! I'm so glad I never had to work for her, want to know why? My friend works for her and as a teacher she paid $14/hour. She dropped it to $10/hr and eventually put her on salary so she can work her for a slave for $200 a week!

My friend had put in over 30 hours one week and had to call off a couple days due to being sick and Deb refused to pay her!

THAT'S ILLEGAL! She even admitted after being with barbizon for over 10 years, all Deb cares about is money and the school sucks.

Please let it be known that it has been said time and time again by the professional modeling agency and models. A ture modeling agency will NEVER...EVER ask you for money.

If you have what they want you get modeling jobs that's where your money will come in at. ONce you have the job the modeling agency gets their cut and you get yours. Once I hear an agency ask me for money to take portfolio pictures and for them to find me work.

I just tell them I'll be back and never return. You should never every take a money out of your pocket for ANYTHING.

#490173

I've read a couple of complaints about barbizon and as a single parent im very disappointed. Me & my daughter went to a so called modeling scouting 5-2-12 and she was very excited but then i noticed everything was about money!

I feel they try and place you some where either it's modeling or acting & then they ask do you have experience and as soon as you say no they suggest you take their classes which the amount is ridiculous....They don't even look like models themselves so how would they be able to tell who has the look/talent!

If someone wants your child to model or they see they have talent i was told that you shouldn't pay a dime!! I see with them it's all about the money...

#483423

you have to read and write to go to Barbizon or model or act!! Maybe that was the girls problem, she can't write! 8)

#483421

I went to barbizon last year and loved it!!!

to Kpierce.....you may want to go back to school to learn how to spell, your writing is pretty poor!!

A girl in my class won a 100K scholarship a few years ago from Barbizon, everyone in my school thought that was also really cool.

#483367

Hey Kpierce5,

I am truly sorry to hear about you bad experience not all Barbizon’s are like that. My mom got me involved with Barbizon when I was 17. I had been to a few smaller agencies and the main reason my mom picked Barbizon was how clean the agency was and the professionalism of the staff. I wanted to model and my mom said I needed to work on my confidence and social skills and then if I wanted to try out the modeling she was ok with that. The staff made me and my mom feel very comfortable. The instructors were dressed like fashion models and were all very kind and knowledgeable – most were in the business as models or actors themselves. I didn’t know that I would like it so much but I did. I am 22 now with a full-time job and I am still doing modeling part-time in Ohio. Not all agencies are the same and Barbizon has been around for something like 70 years. If this is still what you want you shouldn’t give up. Remember an agency can’t hire you; it can only prepare you for possible auditions. The client that the agency sends you to is the only one that actually hires the model or actor. No reputable agency will guarantee you that you will work or be a star and most importantly - what you put into it is what you will get out of it. My best to you and try to stay positive…

Janet

#483014

The reason that you did not learn anything is because you are not yet ready to take a college or university level course. Just look at your spelling and grammar errors and only a child would use a phrase like *** and "sucks". Perhaps that is the reason our friend is making only $200 a week because she is dumb and childish as you.

BARBIZON MODELING AND ACTING

Barbizon received my daughter's information from a kiosk in a local mall. We were called and told a bunch of lies in order to get my daughter to go to a presentation at the Dr. Pepper Star Center in Farmer's Branch, TX. The 'directors' (telemarketers) made my daughter feel like she was going to be a supermodel. Ultimately, Barbizon tells everyone they can recruit or snare the same thing. If you are willing to dish out the $2500, they are willing to tell all kinds of lies to your child.

Barbizon Modeling and Acting is a complete fraud. They prey on average people and their daughter's desire to be a "MODEL". Frankly, Barbizon should be extremely ASHAMED of themselves. No good will come of your selfishness and greed!

People, run if Barbizon 'comes a calling'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They just want your money and could care less about your child.

My parents almost sent their money for the classes this past weekend. My parents work very hard and they do a lot for me.

I have been in dance classes since I was 2. They do everything for me. I am glad we decided to read these comments and do more investigating of Barbizon. I would have felt very badly if my parents lost their money.

Barbizon charges too much and you will not become famous.

Listen to what people are saying about that company. I think they just want our money too.

#473334

Heed the warnings people! If you live in the Dallas area and you want your daughter to have affordable acting and modeling classes, please go to KD (Kim Dawson) Studios.

They have an excellent and honest program. Be blessed always!

#472854

I'm in a Barbizon now and I love my classes, I wish I could go more often. My classes are no where close to 3,000 and my parents did not have to fax over a credit card.

I feel better about my self, my grades are coming up and I look great. They never told me I was going to work or make money. My parents feel if that ever happens that is just an added bonus.

I used to dance until I got hurt and my parents paid way more for my dance classes.

I hate reading things from people who never went to a barbizon and they feel they should not have to pay for anything. I'm glad my parents pay to put me in all of the stuff they do.

#472468

To the delightful hard working people who are even remotely listening to what Barbizon is saying, think about this. If they truly cared about you and your child's well being, would they truly suggest FAXING, hello A FAX, your personal and sensitive credit card information. Anyone could be on the receiving end of a fax and use your information.

Think about how Barbizon INSISTS that you pay immediately! They will even go so far as to tell you if you do not have a credit card to go get a prepaid card.

$2,395 is a lot of money for most. Heed the warnings. Ask a few people. Contact the Screen Actors Guild. They will tell you "yes, classes may cost, but not even a quarter of the price Barbizon charges". Also, I was told you can send you pictures directly to an agency. If an agency is truly interested in you, you do not have to pay anything.

Another 3rd party company you should be aware of out of Florida is a so-called modeling company by the name of "Studio on the Gulf". They have ripped people off too. Take care.

You either work for Barbizon or people like you are the reason Barbizon have been in business for seventy whatever years. Hey, go for what you know. They will not get my money!

By the way, what type of soccer club are you a member of that charges that type of money? Get for real!

Again everyone, keep your hard earned money. That is all they want!!!!!!

#471441

I went to an event kinda like the one your talking about but my experience was way different. all they told me was that the classes could help me get jobs in the future but that it really depends on what i make of it.

a lot of people have unreal expectations, i know im not going to be in vogue or anything so i'm not expecting them to make that happen!

as for the money, i've done sports all my life which costs a LOT of money so my parents were actually happy with the price. way cheaper than club soccer.

Barbizon Modeling SCAM

-SCAM ALERT-

My daughter and I just got back from a BARBIZON MODELING casting call at the Star Center in Farmers Branch in Dallas on Saturday April 04, 2012, to be placed as a model.

My wife spoke to a person named Jenny who assured her after she asked a few times whether they were trying to sell us anything. Jenny assured my wife that placement was free and that we did not have to part with any money.

On arriving there, they went through almost and hour and a half of 'massaging' us for the sale that was about to take place.

To cut a long story short, the casting call was merely a ploy to get us to come to the Star Center to sell some modeling classes.

Although I am not against any school teaching modeling, I am against the deceptive practice and methods they use to get you there on the pretenses that you have been selected to work as a model, they then spring it on you that they can't send you out without you having first done classes.

If they are selling classes they should simply say so and not sell the poor girls and their parents a story that their daughter could be the next big thing but only if they first attend classes.

Jenny was excited to see my daughter and told us that she would definatley be accepted, until I told her that we could not afford nor did we have the budget to shell out $2395 for modling classes. Her whole demeaner then changed and she could'nt get us out there fast enough.

If you are being contacted by BARBIZON MODELING and asked to come to a casting call because you have been selected as a model - don't go, it a SCAM.

Only go if you are specifically looking for modeling classes.

SCAMED.

Lars Lofstrand.

Scam Scam Scam

#545702

Just because you didn't get what you wanted out of Barbizon doesn't mean it's a scam. You want your kid to be a successful model but you should know that modeling takes knowledge and education too.

What client will want to take an inexperienced model with no real model training. Barbizon is a school not an agency, you are not promised a job after you finished, just like going to college, you're not promised a job in your field after you graduate, you have to get out and find some.

If you don't want your child to take modeling classes because they are too expensive then that's on you, and when you decide to show up at a casting call your child will be sitting there looking clueless because you were too cheap to pay for classes. A little tip: no photographer or anyone in the industry is gonna pay for a model that they have to train themselves.

#585323
@PissedConsumer545702

If the girls is approached by someone and told they are going to be used in a modeling situation and then goes for her appointment and finds it to be a pitch for school, it is disappointing. They were not looking for school.

They were told they were going up for a position. My son is there right now and I am afraid he will have the same experience.

they said he was reading for a commercial and he drove almost two hours to get there and I am worried that he will be disappointed to find out it was a scam.

Shame on you if it is. I will come back and post our experience.

#535090

"4. Written by Imani on July 3, 2012 From Livonia, Michigan, US

I took the classes and they were really helpful, I know how to walk like a model and I am able to walk in heels quite well.

This isn't a scam. I know because I took them."

Let me get this straight...you paid $2000+ to learn how to walk in heels????

I could've taught you that for a Big Mac and fries!!!! :)

#534797

After paying $700 to Karen M. Joseph for 6 months of training and dieting, all hard work just recently came to a screeching halt.

I entered the Tampa Bay Classic competition and since it was so hot that day my hair kept falling flat & the women in my category are judged on their complete appearance?. I left to curl my hair, came back (about 2 hours BEFORE my stage time) ready to take my bag to the entertainer's dressing room when Miss Joseph, in front of my Mother and friends, began her tantrum by asking where I'd been". I began to let her know that I was in the entertainers prep". area instead of the main bathroom because there was no mirror by the outlets in that space and sh cut me off, got progressively louder, and called me inconsiderate, physically lunged at me then pointed her finger in my face! All of out of no where and in front of family and friends?.

Her personality has been questionable from the start, as far as her intentions, but I disregarded everything because she came so highly recommended by a close friend of mine;. This friend also let me know that Miss Joseph had been "nit picking" about really small and unimportant things and telling either full on lies and half truths about what I've been doing/. She's untrustworthy.. One of the friends who've witnessed this said that if it had happened to her, she'd quit too because that type of behavior from someone who's supposed to be a mentor is unacceptable!

Karen told me the next day not to come to a meeting and that she'd be discussing my standing with group with Carrie Pollaro!. I let her know that I don't like working with people who make me feel threatened and don't like me ...and feeling pushed out for no reason and harassed, I told her that we should just call it quits and that i'd discuss my refund with her at a later time. Boy, did I stop getting harassing calls after I mentioned the refund. I haven't gotten it yet and am waiting on this paperwork Carrie told me i'd receive within 30 days. They also have my photo up....still on their page. I got ripped off and I'm still helping them out???? I need legal assistance. I believe Karen chose to pick on me because I'm not an intimidating personality & not married.

I'm confused. I want to attend.

I know this is a school.

If you want a school and an agency Go to alix adams (there a bbb business) i just want to know what to except if i get in barbizon :? :?

#506839

This is NO scam. I graduated from their school and have been getting plenty of life changing experiences ! :x

#506482

I took the classes and they were really helpful, I know how to walk like a model and I am able to walk in heels quite well. This isn't a scam.

I know because I took them.

The classes only help girls and some boys to learn things about being a model, ways to live healthy, different ways to present yourself in an audition or open casting call. They don't promise to make you famous and they told me straight up that if I did choose to join Royal Models (the agency associated with Barbizon)that the competition was hard and that I may or may not get jobs my first time trying to get one.

#493512

Barbizon is a modeling school so they will most likely want to give you classes. I just got back from a casting call and they were very nice people.

#491424

I'm not sure if this is a scam, but if it is I don't want my family to become broke. Half of me thinks this is a scam, but the other half thinks there's a brighter future for me if I do join!

For all the Barbizon haters I'm sorry you were ripped off, and got scamed. For all the super stars, congradulations!

#510315

i graduated in 1984. they did nothing for me afterwards. wish my mom could get her money back

#488855

It appears a lot may have changed over the years. I attended Barbizon in Honolulu, HI back in 1982.

I am now 54 years old. I will always be grateful to Barbizon for teaching, molding, and making me the man I am today.

The lessons they taught me will stay with me for the rest of my life, especially, being kind, diplomatic, and pleasant in all regards. Barbizon nurtured my body, mind, and soul; and with giving Barbizon the credit, I have endeared myself, and have been an inspiration and good influence to so many people--I have been told.

#482776

We were stopped at the mall about 8 months prior to the phone call about modeling, so I did not even remember when I received the call what it was about. Like many of the comments, there was never any mention about Barbizon being a school, and not an agency, and having fees, or that the meeting was an open presentation with several dozens of people.

The impression I had over the phone was that a person was meeting with me and my daughter to see if she had any potential. I left the meeting half-way through it, wishing I could get the 1 hour of my day back and do something more productive..

#465177

If you love your daughter, Don't waste your $$$$$$$ or your time. They promised my daughter the world and they did nothing for her. They just want your $$$$$$$$.

#464339

alicemay you dont know ANYTHING i go there and everything you read was 100% wrong anyways why would you want to read the bad comments what about the good ones :?

#464110

Alicemay should be more concern about English and grammar than modeling school.

#463298

First let me mention that I have never attended this school or a meeting with an agent. However, I have been on several different sites reading about Barbizon complaints and it does seem as if a single Barbizon representative is replying to most all of the negative complaints online, as the grammar and linguistic style seems eerily similar in all of them.

They may not be a "scam" as they do offer services for money, but it seems there are a lot of disgruntled people out there. If it quacks like a duck...

#461068

Barbizon is what you make it. We called them to get our daughter involved for the reason of self esteem, socializing with girls like herself, and yes to feel what a great opportunity feels like when people like the ones at Barbizon make you feel...

Like somebody. We went through the classes every weekend along with going to IMTA where our daughter won a third place for head shot pictures. Surely she did not win the most trophies or callbacks but what she won was some self esteem as we found out recently she has a high level of Autism. I don't think it is fake when 2 agents signed her and was offered a contract to put a recording together for Capital records.

Everything we do in life comes at a price whether in money, time, or devotion. Thanks to the folks at Barbizon in Southfield, Michigan for making our experience an exciting and very fulfilling.

Barbizon

Not only is this school a waste of time it is also a waste of money. I personally went through the school for 6 months before graduating.

One my graduation day, a "talent scout" came into our class and judged us. I had a feeling that not a lot of the girl would make it to the show case in Holleywood. Much to my surprise, every single girl made it. Parents and daughters, please use my experience as a reference.

This school is not the school for you.

If you have such a deep passion for modeling like I did, do your research first, and find a school that is real and doesnt cost. Best of luck girls!

Good for you Saloni! They did the same thing to me actually at a Target too.

All they want is to get people into their "company" so they can make money. You go girl!

#523204

Ok Brianna, first of all this isn't an opinon, its a fact thank you very much. I've been through the "school".

If you want to blow over $5000 be my guest.

I'm just trying to help other girls not make the mistake of choosing this "school" for modeling or acting. And learn to spell if your going to insult me.

#523197

THIS SCHOOL SUCKS! My mom and I were walking theough target and a Person comes opuo to my mom and says" Is that your daughter shes beautiful" And i, not pretty at all!

So they gave my mom a brochure and we went and we had perform things.

And they said only a couple of people will get selected and will get a call back, So a week later we got a call and went their and EVERYONE that tried was their and they Told us its $2095 amd at the end You will be a model! So we ditched that they suck

#485449

I get frustrated reading things that people write on here that never went to Barbizon. I went to a Barbizon when I was younger and it really helped me.

I met some of the people who ended up working in LA. and they told us they go their start at Barbizon and Barbizon helped place them in LA. Barbizon helps lots of people with confidence and modeling. A friend of mine went to NYC met with Agencies, they told her to get training and come back.

She is know 23 and works all over the world. I see her in the magazines and all over FB in fashion week fashion shows. She went to the same Barbizon I did.

I did not go for modeling or acting but was happy with what I learned and yes we paid for it but we paid for the training. My dance lessons costed more.

#439982

@22softballgirl this school teaches u lots of things n it also HELPS you get an agency u have to have an agent for everything like modeling , singing , dancing , ect.... anyways

#438561

we r an barbizon. we got invited 2 go 2 new york 4 IMTA conference.

$2500 FOR CLASSES.

$5500 fOR NEW YORK. god, i hope turns out good.

#437798

I agree but this school isn't the best way to get started. It is stated that it has been around for sometime but it is not an established school. The models that claim go through their program and become famous is only because after they do through their schooling they have to go to another modeling agency to get their true start.

#437554

All modeling schools cost money but that doesn't make them a scam, further more you did not have to attend the other thing in Hollywood. There are a few ways to get into the modeling industry, one being by finding an agency to represent you, you can submit to agencies at no cost but it's harder to get discovered.

Modeling schools like Barbizon are actually a great way to get started in modeling, they have a lot of industry contacts. Barbizon has been around for a long time and is actually a reputable company despite posts like this.

Barbizon is a school, not an agency

Update by user Feb 19, 2012

For those of you complaining that you have to pay money, why don\'t you move to east germany, russia, poland, checkoslovakia, cuba, France or any other socialist state. I\'m hearing they are doing pretty well with their free education and healthcare.

All I\'m saying is they did not promise us the lead role in terminator 6 or anything, just some acting lessons, graduation and headshots.

I guess this scam would make any college in the Us a scam. LOL.

Original review posted by user Feb 19, 2012

I am actually here to defend this school. Not so sure where all this complaining is coming from.

They never pretended to be an agency, they are a SCHOOL and they make that pretty clear from the get go. To say that if you have to pay than its a scam, i guess colleges are a scam also? Barbizon did not promise us a contract with an agency, or gigs or movie roles, they simply said she will have class every two weeks for 1 year, have her headshots taken and have a graduation in front of agents. That is it.

Its worth $1600 to me, If not to you, that doesn't mean its a scam, it's an opportunity, its educational on many levels...confidence, stage experience etc. Barbizon apparently does do some do diligence and selects only certain individuals.

Maybe some parents are expecting just a little too much.

At the meeting, Barbizon tells you about their placement program and school. The people who are saying that Barbizon misinterpreted themselves by saying they needed girls for jobs obviously did not pay attention to everything that the host was saying or has selective memory.

If you were ready for work and did not NEED training, you went directly into the placement program for jobs to be found for you. If you were inexperienced and NEEDED training, then you were to be placed in Barbizon's Modeling & Acting School. For the people complaining about Barbizon not finding graduates of their school jobs, please remember that not everyone is meant to be a model. Barbizon teaches more than just modeling and acting, they teach us poise, how to be confident, and how to be comfortable with yourself.

My school even told us that only 3-4 people in it would be found jobs by Barbizon, the others would not. Barbizon is a great school and I enjoy every day that I am there.

If the money is not an issue I recommend enrolling. I go to the Detroit SW and I swear I'm a real person LOL
